
UNIT GOALS
Upon completing this unit, students will demonstrate understanding of the following:
- The purpose of writing is to communicate!
- Written words have power, and different forms of literature have been used, throughout different periods in history, for many purposes.
- Legends and Lore have been used to communicate beliefs and values.
- Poetry and Plays have been used to elicit emotion.
- Political (Persuasive) Writings have been used to effect change.
- Biographies and Memoirs have been used to share personal stories and achievements.
- Fictional Stories and Novels have been used to capture the real or imagined culture of a people, time, and place.
- Certain literary elements are part of every story, and they include plot, setting, characters (protagonist and antagonist), narrator, conflict, theme, mood, and tone.
