With regard to some recent events and revelations, we cannot stay quiet about the issue of the rise of white nationalism in education. This month, we will be pivoting from our usual upbeat tone and focusing our attention on this pressing topic.
Recently, news has come out regarding a Neo-Nazi homeschool network in Ohio with a following of about 2,400 members (see below). Reading about this not only made us angry and disappointed, it also made us scared. A short time ago, we dedicated a month to spreading messages about the importance of teaching empathy and respect for all people. One of our core values, as educators, has always been, and will continue to be, showing respect for all people and teaching that to future generations. So, to hear that there are people who are continuously teaching hate to young people, and to learn how many people agree with them, is disheartening.
This is when we begin to ask questions such as, what can we do as educators? The answer isn’t obvious, nor is it easy. Teaching our kids about the dangers of this type of ideology is a step in the right direction. Read a disturbing example of this serious problem in the link below, and watch the video to learn more about what others are doing to combat white nationalism through education.
