Let’s Learn About Buddhism!

posted on December 30, 2022

Come along for another Field Trip Friday!

In the spirit of embracing appreciation for all people and all faiths, we are exploring the world’s five major religions this month, and this week we are taking a look at Buddhism!

Buddhism differs from the other major religions as it does not follow any deity or deities! Instead Buddhists focus on the individual finding enlightenment, and once they do, it is said that the person will experience nirvana. Buddhism is mostly prominent in East and Southeast Asia, but has been growing in influence in the west.

Buddhism was founded by a man named Siddhartha Gautama, who is portrayed as “the Buddha” by Buddhist. Gautama was born in Nepal, into a wealthy family, as a prince. In the earlier years of his life, he wanted for nothing and everything was given to him. It wasn’t until his late 20’s that he explored outside his lavish lifestyle and witnessed people suffering. This moved him greatly, and he gave up his elaborate lifestyle to seek out enlightenment. Followers believe Gautama found enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree several years later.

Watch the videos below to learn more about the world’s five major religions, and to learn more about Buddhism, specifically!
