Homeschooling families have many options when it comes to curriculum. The Lighthouse Homeschool Solutions program is not for everyone; however, we believe that there are a number of homeschooling families who can truly benefit from what we are providing through our online learning program. What makes Homeschool Solutions unique is the ability to learn together at multiple learning levels with all the tools and resources you need in one place. Our program is designed for homeschooling families who are ready to learn together, or who have a designated parent, caregiver, or teacher providing guidance and engaging in learning activities with students. As a family program, students never need to feel bad about needing support, and parents can share their own thoughts, opinions, feelings, and ideas at every stage of the learning and assessment process. In this way, we hope to make learning with our program enjoyable for everyone!
Our Homeschool Solutions program doesn’t have requirements, grades, or tests. We offer self-contained, online units of study, in core academic areas. Beginning September 1, 2021, these units can be purchased individually, or with an annual subscription. An annual subscription offers access to all available units, including any new ones that are published, throughout the year. The annual and monthly subscription provides access, for the entire family, to a student desk containing the available units of study. This single desk can be shared amongst several students within a family, or additional subscriptions/student desks can be purchased at a discounted rate.
An invested caregiver, an internet connection, and readiness to learn are all that your family needs to experience and enjoy this program. There is a lot that sets us apart from other learning programs, as you will see. So here are some of the main reasons you should consider Lighthouse Homeschool Solutions as the foundation of your family’s homeschool education!
Reason # 1: Essential Knowledge
The quality of our program design has been meticulously thought out! In designing these units of study, we’ve stayed close to our goals of including the truly essential knowledge, and minimizing extra information. One of the frustrations often experienced in traditional classrooms is the emphasis on busywork and memorization of facts that students will likely not recall beyond test day. This often leaves students, and parents, feeling that a great deal of time is wasted in school, not to mention the genuine stress and anxiety that this “cramming for tests” can create for students who don’t retain large amounts of information easily, or who struggle with specific skills. Fortunately, with our program, we’ve turned this around! We started by creating a few specific learning goals to begin each unit. We asked ourselves what key information students need to know about a topic in order to be well educated and culturally literate adults in our present world, and that information became the foundation of our unit goals. From there, we designed activities and gathered resources that would work to support student understanding of those goals. Please note that we do not expect students to simply remember information, we expect them to fully engage with and understand it, which is why we’ve made our goals broad and few. Greater depth of study is always possible, and we provide optional resources to explore when students are ready to dive deeper, but this is not required. Instead, reflecting back on those unit goals, and discussing how each resource or activity supports understanding of those goals, takes primary importance in guiding a student’s experience with our program. And, since genuine comprehension is the ultimate goal, our activities and assessments ask students to think critically about what they’ve learned, not just restate memorized facts.
Reason #2: Critical-Thinking Skills
Our program emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills by asking students to share their understanding, through discussions and activity submissions, as part of every learning activity. With each new activity, in every subject, students are asked to complete an online or printable submission form. To complete this form, students describe their learning activities, summarize what they learned, reflect on their learning experience, consider different perspectives on the information, and think about questions they might have for their parents or teachers.
Reason #3: Student Creativity
Activities such as creative writing, drawing, forming and testing hypotheses, and using imagination to visualize and describe periods in history are at the core of our online learning program. For example, after learning about daily life in Ancient Greece, children will be expected to write and illustrate a diary entry from the perspective of a child from that period in history! Or after reading and reflecting on Native American poems, children are expected to write their own poetry and explain what they hope others experience through their words! After listening to historical political speeches and analyzing the speaker’s intent, children are expected to write and present their own speeches about changes they’d like to see in the world! These activities are included throughout every unit because, while students can acquire information from listening, reading, and watching, they truly learn by creating and doing! Finally, the assessment activity at the close of each unit asks students to express their understanding of the unit goals not only through writing or speaking, but also through creating a visual or artistic representation of their learning. For example, as a final assessment on the European Renaissance, a student might pair an analytical essay with a painting of their own, created in the style of one of the masters. Or, a student can give a news report and pair it with an original song about inventions from this period in history. The options are endless and creativity is key!
Reason #4: Clear & Consistent Format
As educators, we believe that all students benefit from some level of structure and predictability when learning. With this in mind, we’ve organized resources and activities, in all subject areas, into units of study that are clear and consistent. Students know what to expect and can therefore become more confident and independent with their learning activities as they progress.
Reason #5: Families Learning Together
Our units are designed at three levels so that learners of all ages and abilities, in the same household, can be studying the same content! Siblings can learn from each other, support one another, and admire each other’s work as they learn similar information presented at the appropriate level of challenge! This also means that museum trips, art projects, documentaries, hikes, travel adventures, and simple dinner conversations can be simultaneously enriching for everyone in the family.
Reason #6: Activities for Different Learning Styles
We designed the activities in our units with the built-in ability to differentiate for different learning styles and abilities. We understand different learning needs! Therefore, we feel it is very important for children and parents to know that, when the goals of education are learning and expressing knowledge, there is no “right way” to take in new information or share what you’ve learned. All aspects of our online learning program offer flexibility in how students take in information and how they express their understanding. Learning activities include reading, listening, and watching videos to acquire new information, which is then solidified through discussion, reflection, critical thinking, and creative works. Finally, assessments include multiple options for sharing knowledge through traditional speaking and writing activities, as well as through visual forms and creative expression. The flexibility of our program structure, combined with these multiple modalities of learning and expressing understanding, mean that students and parents can tap into the formats that match the student’s interests and learning styles. Furthermore, students who work with their parents to identify their most appropriate formats for learning and expressing knowledge can also embrace supported opportunities to challenge themselves with other formats in order to develop additional skills!
Reason #7: Structure & Flexibility
Our program provides as much flexibility and structure as a family needs. While this may sound contradictory, it is true! We’ve provided the structure of goals, resources, and activities within individual units of study, but a student’s pace and progress depend entirely on the requirements and expectations set by parents! If you’re a parent who doesn’t want to be attached to the many requirements of a specific curriculum, and needs a more flexible approach, our online learning program may offer a great fit. While we recommend resources and activities in a structured process through each unit, you decide which units to work through in which order, which activities to skim and which to spend more time with, how often your student submits an assignment, and whether they handwrite, dictate, or type their submissions. The activity submission form is available online, with responses automatically emailed to the parent or teacher, or in a printable form. The questions on this form are intentionally broad, which gives parents the flexibility to either sit back and see how their children respond to each activity on their own, or to adapt expectations for each submission to the child’s interests and learning style.
Reason #8: Easy-to-Use Program Design
One of the challenges of homeschooling is finding the right resources to support your children’s learning, but we’ve done this homework for homeschooling parents! The educators who design our units of study search online for the best resources to support the learning goals of the unit. Resources include a balance of readings, videos, and interactive tools, and they are laid out, for you and your student, in a clear, step-by-step format within each unit. With our easy-to-use program design, you don’t need to hunt for quality resources and activities to support your children’s homeschool education; you can just login, relax, and enjoy learning alongside them!
Reason #9: Organizational Tools for Parents
We’ve included many useful organizational tools to help parents document and record their students’ learning. Assignments and assessments can be submitted to a parent or teacher via email, or printed directly from our website and hand-written. These activity submissions can be collected and compiled as work samples in order to document student progress. Weekly time logs are also available for parents to print, and these can be used to record time spent engaged in all learning activities, not just those that are part of the Homeschool Solutions program. Extracurricular sports, art and music classes, field trips, and other learning activities can be recorded on this time log. With this tool, parents can confidently document the ways in which they’ve met state homeschooling requirements through numerous enriching learning activities!
Reason #10: A Company Worth Supporting
Educators are at the heart of our small business. Our founders and staff members come from backgrounds that respect the vast learning potential of all children. We are educated and trained in the fields of education and psychology, but we are also hard-working parents. We value experiential learning, critical thinking, respect for all human beings, and the development of the core knowledge and skills that are essential to thriving in our world. Above all, we bring our own sense of fun and humor into everything we do! We are a women and minority-owned company, and we are worth supporting because we give our all to support children and families on their unique educational journeys. Who we are as people, and as a company, are worth partnering with!
